When I moved to Europe I had a list of over 15 countries I wanted to visit within my 2 years here. Believe it or not, Portugal wasn't anywhere on the list. I really have no idea why. Honestly, I'd never heard anything about Portugal and it just wasn't on my radar. Boy was I wrong! As soon as I got here people kept mentioning Portugal. They told me how incredibly beautiful it is how I just had to go. Being that Lagos is only 3.5 hours away from Rota I decided why not? One weekend I gathered a group of friends and we had ourselves a nice little road trip.
First things first, the drive from Rota to Lagos was absolutely stunning. With beautiful mountains and water on both sides I could hardly pay attention to the road. Usually driving puts me to sleep with a quickness but I was wide awake the entire time. It was the a great prerequisite for what was to come.
We actually went on this trip in the middle of July. Obviously, this beautiful beach town was filled with people. And being that it is the southernmost part of Portugal it was fairly warm.... ok it was HOT. Luckily we started our days off pretty early exploring to avoid the heat and spent the hotter part of the days inside or in the water.
We stayed in the cutest Airbnb near Praia da Rocha beach. The views from the balcony were incredible! Check out the video below. The home was about a 10 minute walk to the beach. There was also a boardwalk with tons of restaurants, bars and clubs within a 15 minute walk as well.
Ponta de Piedade
Okay, honestly?? After looking at these pictures do I even have to say anything?? I will NEVER be over this place. After doing some research this beach was the common denominator. Everyone was obsessed and had nothing but great things to say about it. That's why it was the very first place that I drove to upon arriving in Algarve. It did not disappoint. I spent quite a while walking around and taking pictures. Turns out a lot of people take boat tours leaving from this very spot.
TIP: There are 180 stairs you have to descend in order to get to this area. And you already know...what goes down must come up. But I promise it's worth it.
Praia de Camilo
Here lies another one of my favorite beaches that were visited. To get there we parked in full parking lot basically right above the beach. You cant even see it until you get out of the car and walk to the edge. Before you lies another grand staircase with millions of steps. Okay maybe just hundreds but whatever. The view from the top is absolutely gorgeous. I can't speak of the view from the bottom because I was still worn out from Ponta de Piedade that I just couldn't summon the strength the go down. This beach was only about a 5 minute drive from Ponta de Piedade parking.
Unfortunately we didn't have time to make it here. It looks amazing from all the pictures. Hopefully next time!
Ok y'all!! This was the absolute highlight of our trip. I can't get over how much fun we had.
TIP: Peep the fanny pack?? Yea, it's waterproof and came in super clutch. I was able to put my phone and other essentials in there without them getting wet. I'm not a professional kayaker so my boat was filled with water by the end. I would highly recommend purchasing one similar.
We purchased tickets from: https://www.lagosticketshop.pt/kioskatividades
They were 35 euro per person. There were maybe 20 people in our group. 2 people per kayak. Our tour guide was amazing. We went from cave to cave and he gave us the history and fun facts about each beach/cave. We even stopped at one beach for about an hour and had the opportunity to get in the water, snorkel, explore the caves surrounding, or in my case have a photoshoot. This adventure was the highlight of our trip and I would highly recommend it.
All in all Algarve Portugal has definitely been one of my favorite vacation spots in Europe. I literally can not wait to come back. If you're ever in Portugal and you don't come here, you're definitely missing out. Feel free to send me a message if you have any questions that I didn't cover. <3
